Tulips in a striped vase

Underglaze on terracotta  ·  2024  ·  Toronto

Spring arrived quietly on a terracotta plate. Pink tulips rise from a vase in pale stripes, familiar and strange at once — the way a good painting should feel. The underglaze colours were laid down in thin layers, each fired before the next, depth built slowly from the inside out.

This piece began, like all of them, with a single line.

"Every painting I make starts as a question about light. This one asked: what colour is spring when it comes through a window?"

— Dasha Orlinsky, artist
